Why I support sarus/alban elved dance company
As a dancer, I enjoy participating in the versatility of what Karola creates. Her process as a choreographer is extremely thorough, with intense discussion surrounding rehearsals. As an artist I appreciate Karola's elaborate expressive voice in every production. Her attention to detail radiates out of a strongly, yet delicately woven central idea- which is like a living core. I have seen many artists smother the center of their work - it's a slippery endeavor to keep the work alive. Her work is simultaneously sophisticated and raw. After (how many has it been Karola?) years of leading her company, she has accomplished a status beyond 'choreographer'. Her work spans multiple artistic genres, including: dance, set design, costume design, performance art, theater, film, and social commentary. She is not always the sole creator of her projects. Karola attracts talented dancers and artists to collaborate with on many of her productions. She is not daunted by reviving old works and reworking them into new directions.
Sarus Festival is the center of my world for several summer months. It spins a web that spirals out into the community through individual artists' involving their own team of supporters and performers. Specific environments in our area are highlighted as characters themselves in the site-specific sections of the festival. This past year an urban park, tucked into a downtown street became the playground for structured improvisations by 4 distinctly different artists. One contained the idea of homelessness, made more powerful by some homeless folks observing our rehearsal processes on site, and the resulting performances, which actually took place in the rain this time.
Another aspect I have been in love with is co-creating the children's section of the festival. We plan to involve more schools in the future.
What do you invision the future of SARUS will be:
I envision Sarus Festival as Wilmington's own version of Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC. Of course part of the success depends on donors who believe that it's possible to create this here. We certainly do. It also takes local talent and a spirit of derring-do. Which I also believe we have an abundance of here. Infusing our community with outside artistic voices is another aspect of festivals can do. And we intend to maintain a nice balance of local and out of town artists. This past year we worked more with Wilmington's the Dance Cooperative and that relationship will continue to build in Sarus Festival 2016.
What is SARUS to you/what has it brought to the community:
So far I have seen a great light of pure creativity, investigative thought & community discussion to further individual work, as well as art's importance on our culture and daily lives.
Support SARUS because:
Alban Elved is a world-class company right here in Wilmington, NC. It deserves to be supported and kept alive and thriving.

A one of a kind festival whose aim is to bring together arts from many disciplines and locations, with the general purpose of sharing experiential performance-based fine art.
